At this year’s Good Friday Service of Music, the Central Congregational Church Choir – conducted by Patrick Aiken, organist/choirmaster – presents “The Crucifixion” by John Stainer (1840 to 1901), one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation. Stainer modeled this oratorio on the scheme of choruses, chorales, recitatives, and arias in Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion” – while also including five hymns for congregational participation.
