I’m a relatively new member of Central Congregational Church. But in the five years I’ve been here, I’ve met many new friends, and they’ve given me things to do. So now I greet you as a member of the Stewardship Committee.
I’ve been asked to speak to you about why I pledge, and I will get to that in a minute. But first I want to talk about stewardship. Stewardship is the act of caring for an institution or organization in order to ensure its present welfare and future existence. In this sense, we are all stewards of Central, and it is our responsibility to provide our time to needed tasks, participate in congregational activities, and support the church’s financial needs. All of these activities are essential to be good stewards.
I have two main reasons for trying to be a good steward. First, I have come to value the interaction with each of you: the exchange of ideas and sharing of hopes and dreams. I want this community to continue to be here for me. Secondly, I believe that as a Christian, I am obligated to serve others. Over the years, I have come to realize that I can do more and reach farther if I join with others in this effort. Central Congregational Church has an outstanding record of reaching out to its members and those of the broader community who are in need. For these benefits, I am willing to give of my time, energy, and money.
So, in support of my church, I make a pledge each year as a promise to myself that this is what I intend to do, in so much as I am able. My pledge is not a bill. If circumstances change, I can amend it. My pledge serves to remind me to make the effort to be a good steward. It also allows the church officers to know what they can expect when setting the budget. So, I pledge. I hope you will also consider making a commitment to be a good steward and keep our church standing strong in service to our Lord. Thank you. – Don Wolfe
