First Sunday of Advent

Sunday, Nov. 28, 10:30 am

This Sunday marks the beginning of the season of Advent.  Advent – a word that means “coming” – challenges us to look backward and prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. It also asks us to look forward to the Christ who continues to come into our lives and our world. We will celebrate this First Sunday of Advent with the sacrament of communion and the lighting of the first candle in our Advent wreath.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is in immediate need of volunteers on the East Side of Providence for its Home-Delivered Meal Program. Since 1969, this organization has worked to help our state’s homebound older adults live independently in their own homes by providing them with complete and nutritious meals, vital safety checks, and critical opportunities for socialization.  Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 am and 2 pm. For more information and a volunteer application, visit www.rimeals.org or call 401-351-6700.

Construction Update

With asbestos abatement completed, workers have laid quarter-inch plywood in preparation for Chapel Hall’s new wood floor, which will have a contrasting border. The dual staircase leading to the balcony has been roughed in.  Much of the old electric wiring has been removed. And the decorative volutes – the spiral, scroll-like ornaments at the top of the gallery-side columns – have been removed so we can cast replicas for additional columns.  Check out our Construction Photo Ablum every week to see the progress.

Reimagining Chapel Hall

The Campaign to Reimagine Chapel Hall is now at 62.2 percent of goal – and construction is underway! We have removed the old stage and several layers of flooring, including a layer with asbestos. So far, there has been only one major surprise: an unexpected pipe. But Chapel Hall already looks larger, and it is exciting to envision what it will become as we rebuild this important gathering place – with a new stairway and doors; a lower, more accessible stage; and furniture stored away in closets.  See the progress for yourself on our new online Construction Photo Album.

Memorial Flowers

If you would like to donate the flowers that grace our Communion table on Sundays, contact the Church Office. The Flower Committee will make an arrangement, and the names of your loved ones will appear in the Sunday Order of Worship. A donation of $40 is requested.
