The children of Central are asking the entire congregation to join them for Makers’ Day, which launches their new charitable endeavor. We’ll be making bookmarks and friendship bracelets in Chapel Hall – and sweet treats in the church kitchen. All supplies will be provided. We just need the “human resources.” Ultimately, the kids will sell all of these handmade goodies to benefit a charity of their choosing. Please come and lend a hand!

Historian / best-selling author Kristin Kobes Du Mez headlines the 2026 Darrell West Lecture. Her book “Jesus and John Wayne” analyzes how many white evangelicals have embraced rugged masculinity, patriarchal family values, and fear of Islam – while developing a quest for political power and an aggressive foreign policy agenda. A question-and-answer session and book signing follow. The lecture takes place in the Sanctuary. But please also join us at 5:30 pm for a Central-members-only reception ($10 each) in the Fireplace Room.
This month, the Central Congregational Church Choir will present “Litaniae de venerabili altaris Sacramento,” written in 1776 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – featuring soloists and orchestra. It is the last and most mature of Mozart’s four Litany settings, written when he was just 20 years old! The program also includes the opening movement of Bach’s “St. John Passion.” Please stay after for a wine and bread reception in Chapel Hall.
Central’s Ash Wednesday worship service is a time for quiet contemplation. On this the first day of Lent, we share in communion, and those who wish receive ashes – an ancient custom that not only marks the beginning of Lent, but also represents a time of repentance and reflection. Please join us in the Sanctuary.
Central will host prayer gatherings through the beginning of Lent. We’ll offer some simple teaching on prayer, spend time in quiet prayer together, and then share to share our praises and concerns. If you’ve ever wondered what exactly you’re “supposed to do” when you pray, please come. No experience with group prayer is necessary – just a desire to be present with God and one another. Join us in Wilson Chapel.
All Central middle and high schoolers are invited to get together for food, fun, and fellowship at East Side Pockets (278 Thayer Street, Providence). Check out the menu (www.eastsidepocket.com) to see the diverse Middle Eastern fare – including the best falafel around! Please meet up with Cristina on the Chapel Hall stage during Coffee Hour before walking over to the restaurant.
Join us in welcoming new members to the Central family during Worship and then stay after for the New Member Reception – where we hope you will personally greet each and every one of them – and Potluck Luncheon in Chapel Hall. The Membership Committee will provide main dishes, but you can enliven the fare by sharing a favorite side dish, casserole, salad, or dessert. And, please remember to wear your name tag!
Last December, The Gallery at Central presented drawings and illustrations from the ten children’s books by Central’s own Peter Mandel, including Jackhammer Sam; Bun, Onion, Burger; Zoo Ah-Choooo; and Say Hey! A Song of Willie Mays. Now that the Christmas rush has passed, Peter will discuss “From Idea to Edits to Art: How a Kids’ Book is Born.” Please join him in Chapel Hall after Worship to discuss how children’s books are brought to life.
