Gathering Sunday

Sunday, Sep. 7, 10:30 am

Gathering Sunday is here! It is the day we gather together at the end of a beautiful summer to rejoin our little piece of Christ’s body that resides here in Providence. The Central Congregational Church Choir will sing, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism and distribute Bibles to children in grades three through seven, and senior minister Patrick Faulhaber will preach a sermon entitled “Creation by the Word” (Genesis 1:1-2:4a).

Memorial Courtyard Renovation

Central is adding 48 niches to Central’s underground columbarium so it may continue to be available for the interment of ashes. Excavation will be completed this month, and landscaping will begin in September. This contemplative space will retain a green and tranquil quality – welcoming those who intentionally seek it out, as well as those passing through who may linger for a moment in meditation or prayer.

Summer Choir

Sunday, Aug 31, 10 am

With Central choirs on hiatus, Choirmaster Patrick Aiken is introducing a “Summer Choir.” Singers of all ages will gather in the chancel every Sunday morning for warmup exercises and a brief rehearsal of the service’s hymns and the occasional introit. Patrick encourages “regulars” and newcomers alike to try out their singing voices and help lead music during Worship!

Summer Bible Study

Sunday, Aug. 17, 9 am

This summer, Claudia’s Bible Study Group explores The Gospel of Luke, the third of four Gospels relating the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. Luke stands out from other Gospels with its emphasis on inclusivity, historical context, and literary style. It also focuses on the marginalized and offers broader historical context.  Come to one session or to all of them. Join us in the Fireplace Room for this week’s topic: “The Gospel.”

Lunch at Aleppo Sweets

Sunday, Aug. 17, 12 noon

Join Central friends after Worship for an authentic Syrian repast. Check out the café menu (www.alepposweets.com/cafe-menu). And, don’t forget to save room for the baklava! Please RSVP to Claudia. We’ll meet at Aleppo Sweets (107 Ives Street, Providence).

Summer MIDWEEK

Wednesday, Aug 13, 6 pm

Mark your calendar:  Join us in Chapel Hall for Summer MIDWEEK, a special monthly program for kids, teens, and adults alike. We will share a meal at 6 pm as usual and then turn our attention to a story of our faith from the Bible. We’ll end the evening on the West Lawn, making s’mores around the firepit. If you like, bring a chair or blanket for comfier lawn seating.

Providence Children’s Museum

Sunday, Aug. 17, 2 pm

Families with children of all ages are invited to play and create at the Providence Children’s Museum. Explore the swirling ways of water, learn about plants, take a time-traveling adventure, and even create a blue-block world that goes beyond the imagination. Admission is $17 each – but only $14 for groups of five. So invite some friends, RSVP to Cristina, and let’s have some fun together! We’ll meet at the museum (100 South Street, Providence).

Flower Committee Vacancies

The Flower Committee needs your help! This committee is responsible for flower arrangements during Worship, but also has another, equally important, mission: building community! After services, committee members bring these flowers to Centralites who can no longer join us on Sundays or who have lost loved ones – a tangible reminder that they are not forgotten. Please join us in this very rewarding endeavor.  Contact the Church Office, Beverly Haviland, or  Cheryl Ludwig.

Carousel Sunday

Sunday, Aug 3, 12:30 pm

Let’s meet after Worship at the amazing Crescent Park Carousel, a National Historic Landmark built in 1895 by the famous designer Charles Looff. Whether you ride or watch, it is a piece of Americana – and fun for children and adults alike! Bring a snack or picnic lunch, if you like. Questions? Ask Claudia. The Carousel is in Crescent Park (700 Bullocks Point, Riverside).
