Easter Vigil

Saturday, March 30, 7 pm

The Easter Vigil is the church’s first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This meditative, candlelit service is traditional in every way except length. Lasting approximately 45 minutes (instead of all night), it includes a service of the light, service of the Word, service of baptism, and service of communion. Please join us in Wilson Chapel.

Reading Ruth

Sunday, Mar. 10, 11:30 am

In times past, early Christians gathered together to hear the Bible read aloud. That’s how we will encounter Ruth. In this, one of the shortest books in the Bible, Ruth, a Moabite woman, marries into a Jewish family, becoming one of Jesus’ ancestors: King David’s great-grandmother. Join us in the Fireplace Room for a soup and bread lunch as we listen to Ruth’s story of disaster, perseverance, and loyalty. RSVP to Claudia.

Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sunday, Feb. 25, 4 pm

Central Congregational Church Choir – under the direction of organist/choirmaster Patrick Aiken – will present “A Sermon from the Mountain,” by Alice Parker (1925 to 2023). This powerful cantata – commissioned after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., integrates Dr. King’s texts with scripture. Accompanied by string quartet, bass, piano, and drums, the music is turbulent, jubilant, ethereal, and always profound – challenging and inspiring us to work for nonviolence.

The Netherlands Quiz

Sunday, Feb. 11, 12 noon

After a six-month stay in Providence, our friends from the Netherlands – Bart Koopman, Elize Koopman-Verhoeff, and daughter Anne-Sophie – will be returning home. To say goodbye on their last Sunday at Central, Bart and Elize will present an interactive “Netherlands Quiz,” providing insights into their home country – just as they’ve learned so much about ours. Pick up ice cream at the Scouts BSA Social and join them in Chapel Hall.

Scout Sunday / Ice Cream Social

Sunday, Feb. 11, 11:30 am

Scouting roots grow deep at Central. We are the sponsoring organization for Scouts BSA Troop 28. During the worship service on Scout Sunday, we will recognize our Scouts for their many contributions and accomplishments over the past year – and then enjoy their hospitality at an ice cream social during coffee hour in Chapel Hall.

Wellness Workshop

Wednesday, Jan. 24, 10 am

Central’s friend and neighbor, Dr. Saira Hussain, hosts these twice-a-month (usually) community-based, holistic-living workshops. Every session brings together people from all walks of life to share experiences and tips for living healthier, more positive lives.  Activities include yoga, cooking demonstrations, and more. To participate, text Dr. Hussain at 401-405-6482.

Welcome Our New Senior Minister!

Sunday, Jan. 21, 10:30 am

This week we officially welcome our new senior minister, Patrick Faulhaber, and his wife Susannah to Central’s Sunday Worship – where Patrick will preach his first “official” sermon.  Please stay after for Coffee Hour to personally greet Patrick and Susannah and help us introduce these Southerners to some Rhode Island hospitality.  (And be sure to wear your name tag!)

Scouts BSA Troop 28

Tuesdays, 7 pm

Scouting roots grow deep at Central. Central is the sponsoring organization for Scouts BSA Troop 28, which offers young people adventure, camaraderie, and mentorship in character. The troop has a strong outdoors program – including camping, hiking, climbing, canoeing, and skiing – and offers a number of merit badges and skill-building sessions. Troop 28 is open, inclusive, respectful, and – during the school year – meets weekly in the Makepeace Room.

Member Photos Needed!

Sunday, Jan. 7, 11:30 am

Help our new senior minister get to know our congregation! We’re collecting photos of every Central member for a new digital directory. If you have an up-to-date(-ish) headshot, email it to photos@centralchurch.us along with your full name. (No group or family photos.) Or, stop by the Membership Committee’s “photo booth” during Coffee Hour, and we’ll take one for you. Just be sure to smile for the camera!
